Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System Snow and Ice Data Set Available in NetCDF File Format

SUITLAND, MD — The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) performs scientific research of the Earth’s cryosphere, manages and distributes data and tools, and supports data users. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA) team at the NSIDC (NOAA@NSIDC) and U.S. National Ice Center (USNIC) announced Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System (IMS) data is now available in NetCDF file format for 1km and 4km gridded data, as of August 17, 2021. The NetCDF format is currently being produced by NOAA’s Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) and was developed in partnership with the NOAA Meteorological Development Lab (MDL) and the NOAA PolarWatch Group. The IMS is an operational software used to demarcate snow and ice in the northern hemisphere. The data is used for weather model initialization, academic research, and various science related purposes.
